DO YOU HAVE BRACES OR DOES SOMEONE YOU LOVE HAVE BRACES? As you know, underneath all that metal, your teeth are moving around, and inching you ever closer each day toward a fantastic smile! Wouldn’t it be a shame if, once the metal comes off, you had a whole bunch of cavities!? That would be awful!
So, don’t let it happen!
All that gadgetry that’s currently tormenting you—from the springs and wires to the rubber bands—can attract food and plaque! Dr. Pitts reminds us all, “It is important to properly brush and use floss and/or mouthwash per your orthodontist’s recommendations. Plaque left on teeth and around your braces could cause your gums to swell, your teeth to become discolored, chronic stinky breath and perhaps, even some cavities.”
Cleaning Your Braces Correctly May Be A Chore, But It’s Worth It
Millions of people in North America wear braces. If you’re one of them (or one of your children) be sure to pay attention to detail. Although it requires spending a little more effort before bedtime… in the long run it will be worth it.
The purpose of this post isn’t to go over all the details of caring for teeth with braces. We just want to talk about cleaning them. Your orthodontist has already told you lots of do’s and don’ts. But as a reminder, there are foods you should probably just avoid all together including taffy, caramels, and hard nuts. Oh, and avoid chewing ice or bubble gum—and be careful with things that are hard to bite, like apples and bagels.
